New Place - Nash House
New Place, Shakespeare's home from 1597 until his death in 1616,was pulled down in the eighteenth century but its foundations and grounds can be seen, including a beautiful Elizabethan-style knott garden ie created eighty years ago.
The site is approached through Nash's House adjoining, which contains
exceptional furnishings of Shakespeare's period. The rooms on the lower level
include some early seventeenth century oak furniture. Upstairs, there is an
exhibition dealing with the history of Stratford-upon-Avon before and after
Shakespeare.
House
Garden
One large step leads into the property. The ground
floor and the garden is mainly flat. The exhibition on the upper floor is via a
long flight of wooden stairs. The exhibition itself is well lit and clearly
presented. Again, visitors should be aware of the uneven flooring of the
interior. A small step leads to the garden and a narrow uneven pathway leads to
the property’s accessible W.C. Other toilets are accessed via a shallow step.
